News – October 2014

News:
  • The Cinnamon and MATE editions of Linux Mint 17.1 ‘Rebecca’ passed quality testing and were approved for an RC release. They should become available at the end of this week. The MATE edition sports out of the box support for the Compiz window-manager (which comes pre-installed, pre-configured and which you can switch to with a click of a button). The Cinnamon edition features the new Cinnamon 2.4 desktop which features were announced on Segfault and which an early version of was made available as a preview in the Romeo section of the Linux Mint 17 repository. All 17.1 editions (including upcoming KDE and Xfce editions) also feature a huge number of improvements on tools, system layers, artwork and other aspects which they have in common. This will be described in detail with their release announcements.
  • The release process hasn’t changed but because a lot of users are new to Linux and to Linux Mint, I’ll explain it very briefly here. For each edition there are two releases: The RC (“Release Candidate”) and the Stable release. Both releases pass quality testing and are fully functional. However, because the RC is the first release to be publicly available, it represents the first opportunity for users to find bugs the development team was not aware of. From experience, I can say this with certitude: Although we’re usually really happy with the quality of our RCs, we always do find and fix a lot of bugs after the RC and prior to the Stable release. In the two weeks which usually separate the two releases, we listen to feedback, we take notes for the next release and we fix a lot of bugs. In brief: 17.1 will be out in the days to come, but it’s an RC. You might think it’s really stable, and maybe it will be, but we encourage people who want to help us find bugs to try it out and people who are interested in using it for real to skip it and to wait until the end of the month to get the Stable release instead.
  • If you’re using Linux Mint 17 and you want to upgrade, you do not need a fresh installation. A short time after the stable release, we’ll make an upgrade available for you which will be both safe and trivial to perform.
  • On the LMDE side, work is continuing on Betsy. Debian Jessie is getting ever more stable, Cinnamon 2.4 is being ported to it and adapted to components which Linux Mint doesn’t use (GTK 3.14, Upower 0.99 and Systemd). This is facilitated of course by the fact that Cinnamon is cross-distribution and that other distributions already used these components.
  • Many many thanks to all the people who are supporting us and everyone who contributes in different ways in making Linux Mint better. To the people I work with on a daily basis, moderators and developers in particular, it’s a real privilege to be working with you. We get so much done and it’s often so much fun, it’s really enjoyable. To all the people who donate, and to our sponsors, thank you for empowering us the way you do. We’ve no issues or worries getting in the way of development or project focus and that is thanks to you. To all the people who sent us ideas and are about to send us feedback… you create what we use to make Mint better release after release. Cinnamon 2.4 available for beta-testing in Linux Mint 17

A brand new version of Cinnamon is out and it will be featured in the upcoming release of Linux Mint 17.1 at the end of the month.
For a quick look at its new features, please read the official announcement: Cinnamon 2.4
In the next two weeks we’ll be using your feedback to improve Cinnamon and to fix eventual bugs in preparation for the next Linux Mint release.
If you want to help beta-test the new desktop (beware: There will be bugs, there always are bugs in new releases, that’s why we leave a month between the releases of Cinnamon and Linux Mint), you can upgrade Cinnamon to version 2.4.0 by following the instructions below:
  • Launch Menu->Administration->”Software Sources”.
  • Tick the option “Unstable Packages (Romeo)”.
  • Carefully read the warning in the dialog that pops up and click “Yes” if appropriate.
  • Launch the Update Manager and click on “Refresh”.
  • If a new mintupdate version is shown, apply it.
  • Apply all updates related to Cinnamon (sort by version, 2.4.0 or 2.4.1, or by update type since they all come from Romeo).

Linux Mint 17.1 codenamed ‘Rebecca’

Codenames on the 17.1 series were allowed to break the tradition. They won’t start with a Q, as they should, but with an R instead. It wasn’t easy to find a codename starting with Q initially, and with the move to LTS it’s getting harder and harder as the series might get a total of 4 or more releases.
The first 17.x point release will be Linux Mint 17.1 codename ‘Rebecca’.
Rebecca is of Hebrew origin and its meaning is “to bind”. The name was borne in the Bible by the wife of Isaac. It was also made famous since 1938 by the book from Daphne du Maurier entitled “Rebecca” and adapted into a movie by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940.
Despite its “R” name, Rebecca will share the same base as Qiana. Linux Mint 17 users will have the choice to upgrade or not, and that upgrade will be both easy and safe.

  • New features for Linux Mint 17.1 are being developed and described on the Segfault blog as they near completion. Lately, the Update Manager received an improved kernel selection screen as well as richer and localized package descriptions.
  • After a long reflection and many discussions the decision was made to switch Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) from its current snapshot cycle to a Debian Stable package base. The transition from Update Pack 8 to Debian Jessie should be smooth and similar to a traditional UP upgrade, in sync with the upstream Jessie freeze planned for November this year.

Qiana “v2″ ISO respins


The ISO images for the Cinnamon and MATE editions of Linux Mint 17 “Qiana” were updated and labelled “v2″. All the links were updated on the website and in the announcements to point to the new ISOs.
If you’re already running Linux Mint 17, you don’t need to reinstall.
The new ISO images provide fixes for the following issues:
MDM crash with non-xrandr compatible GPUs

On SIS cards or cards which were not compatible with xrandr, mdm crashed when scanning the available monitors and booting Linux Mint 17 resulted in a black screen.
Dangerously ambiguous label could lead people to mistakenly wipe their hard drive
In the installer, when other operating systems were detected, the option to wipe the hard drive was ambiguously labelled “Replace $OS and install Linux Mint”. Although this option warned about removing data, it led people to believe it would only delete partitions and data associated with the mentioned operating system.
Driver Manager didn’t handle missing firmwares correctly
The driver manager incorrectly assumed the user was running a manually installed driver when in presence of a device which required the installation of “linux-firmware-nonfree”.
Corrupted APT sources when / partition wasn’t formatted

In the case where Linux Mint was installed over an existing / partition and this partition was not formatted, the installer used to call apt-clone and this resulted in corrupting the APT sources.
Skype and some WINE or Steam games didn’t work well out of the box
Better out of the box experience for Steam, Wine, Skype, LibreOffice-base 
A few additional packages were selected and installed by default, such as ia32-libs, libgl1-mesa-dri/glx,  libreoffice-sdbc-hsqldb, to make it easier to run Steam or Wine games in 64-bit, to get better support in 32-bit applications such as Skype or to provide better support for LibreOffice Base.
All level 1 updates were added
All the level 1 updates and bug fixes published since the official release a month ago were added to the new ISO images.
Note to existing users
Although all these changes provide a smoother experience to newcomers. If you already installed Linux Mint and applied all level 1 updates, you do not need to reinstall it.
Note also that the KDE and Xfce editions won’t get respins as these issues either do not apply to them or were already fixed in time for their stable releases.

Linux Mint 17 “Qiana” Released!



Linux Mint 17 has been released.
Linux Mint 17 codenamed “Qiana” is a long term support release​ based on Ubuntu 14.04 which​ will be supported for 5 years

Linux Mint 17 is available in two editions MATE & Cinnamon. It comes with updated software and many new features, both editions are available for 32bit and 64bit architectures.
Here's a summary of changes found in Linux Mint 17 :
